Richard Bailey, Patent Attorney - Marks and Clerk
'Patents and Trade Marks - some best practice advice'
Companies that create new products, services and brands can protect them, by way of ‘Intellectual Property’ (IP) rights such as patents and trade marks.
The benefits of such protection are clear:
- IP rights are ‘monopoly’ rights, stopping your competitors from exploiting your ideas.
- Just like other forms of property, IP can be sold or licensed, bringing in additional revenue for your business.
However, managing your IP can be time-consuming and costly. In this seminar we will provide some best practice advice to help you manage your IP effectively.

Businesses of today are in search of an edge over their competitors and this is where technological innovation really matters. It is also where opportunities frequently present themselves. However, the technology sector today is like the Gold Rush of the 1800s; it has attracted swathes of entrepreneurs seeking fame and fortune and its competitive.
Starting any sort of business is a challenge. Starting a technology business is even more challenging and presents some unique hurdles. Spotting opportunities that have not emerged on the commercial stage requires a clearly articulated vision backed by a viable and realistic business model. If external funding is required to execute the business plan, it must finely balance achievable goals with a concept attractive enough to interest professional investors – this is not easy.
Of course planning and funding represent only a small portion of the tasks confronting entrepreneurs in the early stages of business development . The talk will address the key points of:
Initial idea, market research and funding- Business modelling, and the business plan

Professor Derek Mowbray, Charterd Psychologist - OrganisationHealth Psychologists
'Productivity through leader behaviour: learn the psychology'
The measurement and management of human resources is a crucially important activity of any successful organisation. And there is growing evidence, associated with recent research including a report that was released in 2006 by a division of the British Psychological Society and the Centre for Applied HR Research, that organisations which use Occupational Health Psychology and its associated tools are able to work more smartly, become more effective and deliver a wide range of benefits including:
Improved recruitment, retention and capability of employees- Higher levels of productivity
- Reduced levels of absenteeism
- Improved financial performance
The ‘added value’ that psychology brings to this area is a proper, in depth understanding and appreciation of the underlying behaviours of individuals which can be harnessed to secure a complete transformation of the workplace and all its employees through high levels of motivation, commitment, loyalty and wellbeing all of which can be accurately measured by proven methodologies.
Professor Derek Mowbray, an eminent Chartered Psychologist, provides key expertise and professionalism in this complex but increasingly influential area and specialises in psychologically sound management and leadership behaviour change programmes including training, coaching and mentoring. OrganisationHealth Psychologists’ innovative, bespoke developments deliver transformation of workplace culture and strategies which prevent the causes of expensive and damaging employee stress, sickness, absenteeism and high staff turnover thereby ensuring optimum performance and productivity.
