GETTING THE BEST OUT OF YOUR PEOPLE

David Baker (Chief Executive) - Metamorphose

Content: David Baker presented John Adair’s 'Action Centred Leadership' model. Adair's theory is one of the most recognisable and iconic symbols in management training. Adair's Action-Centred Leadership model illustrates three core management responsibilities: Achieving the task, Managing the team and Motivating individuals. David discussed the practical applications of the model in meeting the demands of modern business and explored how business leaders can motivate in a way that will get the best from their individuals and their teams

With a degree in psychology, an early career in publishing saw David becoming the youngest Chief Executive of an IPC company where he successfully launched their Special Publications Division. David then moved to become Managing Director of Leadership Development Ltd and during this period was widely regarded as one of the UK’s foremost seminar speakers sharing his ideas on motivation and professional selling worldwide. As Chairman of meta-morphose International, his training style and presentation skills have consistently been described as ‘inspirational’.

UNCHARTED WATER

Dale Hemming-Tayler shared LoNo's story of growth, looking back on the opportunities and challenges presented by this previously untapped market and how they successfully and creatively used e-commerce to create a brand and a market, resulting in their winning of an E-business award and an expanding business. Established by Dale and his wife Kay, Dale talked us through the development of this family business, and shared his journey of relatively uncharted waters, discussing the benefits and pitfalls of an e-commerce based approach to business, and sharing some of his secrets of success!

This seminar appealed to those who were interested in hearing about how to create a new market and how to use e-commerce to establish and successfully grow a business.

Dale Hemming-Tayler is a retired soldier with thirty years service in the armed forces. His forte is in organisation and deployments, with a specialty in logistics, particularly the movement of personnel and material in operations. As such, he has planned and executed major mobilisation operations for the Canadian and American forces, as well as the British Army and NATO. Dale is Managing Director of LoNo Drinks Company, the UK’s leading specialist in alcohol free wines and drinks which has been trading for 5 years. Dale set-up the company after ill-health forced him to give up the red wine he loved and now provides what he describes as a ‘public service’ for people who abstain from alcohol.

DEVELOPING YOUR INFORMATION SYSTEMS FOR GROWTH

Martin Wynn (Principal Lecturer) - University of Gloucestershire Businesss School

Content: Many organisations are at a crossroads in terms of Information Systems strategy. Growing companies often find their systems inadequate as they have been pieced together over time and not significantly integrated to facilitate further growth. The dilemma is whether to continue to limit investment to piecemeal additional systems and e-business infrastructures as the business expands, and thus still suffer the problems of non-integration, lack of consistent management information, and restricted exploitation of e-business opportunities. Do you patch over the gaps, completely overhaul the systems, or find a middle ground that better enables continued expansion? Dr Wynn drawed on his experience implementing IT/IS strategies in 8 local SMEs. This seminar will show you the next steps your company can take to support mid and long-term growth and profitability aspirations.

This seminar summarised the results of 8 discrete projects to upgrade or replace information systems in SMEs. These projects lasted between 18 months and two years, and were carried out by project managers working for the University of Gloucestershire’s Business School under the auspices of the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) scheme. Eight different project managers were used to lead these IS projects, with in-company supervision. The projects focussed on systems replacement and process change but also involved on-going support and upgrade of the IT/IS infrastructure. Dr Wynn provided external project direction and support in all eight projects.

Dr Martin Wynn is Principal Lecturer in Computing at the University of Gloucestershire’s Business School. He is working with a number of Gloucestershire organisations to deliver Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, a government-funded scheme which provides Department of Trade and Industry funding to allow graduates with several years’ experience to lead major strategic projects in industry.
